‘John Wick: Chapter 2‘ ramps up the action of the first, but doesn’t have the emotional core that the first had. Click through to read my full review
‘John Wick: Chapter 2‘ is the sequel to the 2014 surprise hit ‘John Wick‘ which introduced us to the man, the myth, the legend, John Wick (Keanu Reeves). The movie starts off almost where the last one left off. Showing our hero kicking ass and not taking names while a voice-over of the man he’s after is basically just catching the audience up on who John Wick is. Besides the opening, the movie starts off a little slow. He is baited back into his old life, again, by Santino D’Antonio (Riccardo Scamarcio). The man who initially helped John escape his old life to live as a free man with his wife. John is then forced to do one more “impossible” job for Santino or face death. From then on the movie starts to find it’s footing again by building more on the world they already established in the first and more kick ass action that is both brutal and awe-inspiring.
The action and fight scenes in this movie are definitely ramped up from the first one to great success. Reeves makes you believe that he is a bad ass not to be fucked with. Which sets a high bar for his co-stars that share the screen with him to really step up their game. And they all arise to the occasion. Common, in particular, is a stand out among the cast. His fight scenes with Mr. Wick were some of the best of the movie and I never thought he wasn’t a worthy adversary for our titular hero. And the makers of this movie finally figured out the perfect role for Ruby Rose. And that is if you don’t let her speak, she’ll do a great job.
The movie itself was lacking on the story side. Which is fine when you just want to see action. But you do want a little bit of story to drive the character. I know that the first movie didn’t have a bunch of story, but it did have something that drove our character. His wife dies, they kill his dog which was the last thing his wife had left for him, and he goes on a rampage to get revenge for what they took from him by any means necessary. And he will die if he has to. But, in this one he basically is put back into the world because they tell him we’ll kill you if you don’t. Now, this is a man who has already shown that death does not scare him. So, why would he do all of this again just because they said “We’ll kill you”? It just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.
However, the action in this movie is incredible and we finally get to see what John Wick can do with a “fookin’ pencil”! I want to see more of the world that they built which was definitely given even more elegance and class in this one. And John Wick has never been more bad ass. I look forward to another one and hope this can be our new action franchise ala the ‘Bourne‘ series. I will definitely be seeing this movie again.
‘John Wick: Chapter 2‘ is directed by Chad Stahelski and was released on February 10th.
